II. READING.
It's a hot, sunny summer day. Your family's car has been sitting in a parking (66).......for several hours. The windows are closed, and there's no shade in (67)....... Are you eager to get inside? Probably not, because the car is a small example of the greenhouse effect. It will be super-hot. The Sun's rays pass through the glass and warm the inside of the car. The heat doesn't escape very easily from the (68).......interior. The glass is much less transparent to heat than it is to light.
A greenhouse for plants works about the (69).......way. That's how the name greenhouse effect was given to a property of the Earth's atmosphere. Light rays from the Sun pass through the atmosphere and strike the ground. This energy from the Sun warms up the ground. The warm Earth then radiates that heat back toward space. But the heat doesn't escape into space. Why not? There's no glass enclosing the Earth, but there are many (70).......gases in the Earth's atmosphere that behave a bit like greenhouse glass. Water vapour and carbon dioxide are two (71).......gases. Both of them allow sunlight to pass through, but they trap heat and (72) ....... it from escaping into space. It's a good thing for life on Earth that there is a greenhouse effect. Without it, the Earth would be about 60 degrees colder (73).......average. So, a little greenhouse effect is good for life on Earth. But as more and more heat-trapping gases are added to the atmosphere, the greenhouse effect gets stronger. The Earth could warm up (74)......
several degrees by the middle of the next century. What might some of the effects be?
Higher sea level. As the temperature rises, the polar ice caps will melt. As a result, the sea level could (75)...... several feet. Then low-lying areas, such as southern Florida or Louisiana, would be flooded. (76)......, the entire country of Bangladesh might be flooded.
Habitats on the move. An area that has a favorable climate for certain plants and animals is called a climate zone. Scientists have predicted that climate zones may move hundreds of miles with a change in temperature of just a few degrees. Some plants and animals won't be able to (77)......., and may become extinct.
Drier as well as hotter weather in many places. For example, the Great Plains of the United States - the great farming region of our country - might become drier and less (78)........ The causes of the greenhouse effect, as we have seen, are gases that trap heat next to the Earth. Where are these gases coming from? Some are natural parts of the atmosphere. The problem is that the (79).......of many gases is increasing in the atmosphere as a result of human activities. Take carbon dioxide, for example. Automobile engines release it as a (80).......product of burning gasoline. So do electric generating plants powered by coal, oil or natural gas. And carbon dioxide also escapes when tropical forests are cut and burned.
