Does It Make a Difference?
Andy Lipkis was 15 years old when he went camping in the mountains near Los Angeles, California. He soon discovered that many of the trees there had been damaged or killed pollution from city. Although he was still a teenager, he wanted to do something to change the situation. He got all the campers together and suggested planting trees to replace those that had died. Together, they planted 8,000 trees.
Encouraging people to plant trees is still Lipkis’s main interest. He is now in his fifties and is the leader of an organization called TreePeople, which teaches children how trees can create a healthy environment. TreePeople also trains teenagers as well as adults to plant and care for trees around their schools, homes, and in the neighborhood. On average, 250 trees have been planted around each elementary school. The trees help keep the building cool and protect students from too much heat and sun. they also help control flooding. Of course, they help make the environment look beautiful, too.
