It was summer already and Meng Lan wanted to look for a vacation job during the holidays. She did not want to be like many other undergraduates on campus who were busy making plans to idle away their time frivolously. Meng Lan was an international student. She came from Taiwan. Her parents had scrimped and saved just to be able to send her to Australia to further her studies. They could not afford an air ticket for her to go home for her holidays. Meng Lan had been in Australia for a year. She had not gone home since her arrival. She was starting to feel a little homesick. She decided to look for a vacation job so that she could save up some money to buy an air ticket home at the end of the year. One of Meng Lan's friends had introduced her to a waitressing job at a café in the neighbourhood. She was very grateful for her friend's recommendation. The fact that the café was nearby meant that Meng Lan could walk to and from work and that would save transportation costs. Meng Lan was an exemplary employee. She learnt the ropes very quickly and the owner of the café was very impressed with her performance. Meng Lan was also very polite to the customers. As such, the owner actually made her an offer. He offered to let her continue working there during the weekends once her school term started again. Meng Lan could not believe her ears. She knew that being able to continue working once the holidays ended meant that she would be able to increase her savings more quickly. True enough, at the end of the year, Meng Lan was able to afford an air ticket home to see her parents. Not only that, she even had some money left over to buy them each a present from Australia. She could not wait to be reunited with them. 33. Many students on the campus were busy looking for a part-time job during the vacation. 34. Meng Lan’s motive of finding a vacation job was to buy an air ticket to visit her parents in Taiwan. 35. Travelling to the café shop cost her a fortune. 36. Her performance made a good impression on the owner of the café shop. 37. Meng Lan could save up enough money to visit her parents at the end of the year.
