Born Maria Sklodowska, Marie Curie was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867. Her father taught high school physics. In 1891 she went to Paris (where she changed her name to Marie) and enrolled in the Sorbonne. Two years later she passed the examination for degree in Physics, ranking in first place. She met Pierre Curie in 1894, and they married in 1895.
Marie Curie was interested in the recent discoveries of radiation. Pierre joined his wife’s research, and in 1898 the Curies announced their discovery of two new elements: radium and polonium. Marie Curie was the first woman in France to be a university professor. She was also the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize. With the founding of the Radium Institute in 1914 Marie Curie made her humanitarian wish come true.

 Dear Nam,
 Would you like to be my pen friend? I am seventeen 
 years old and 1.58 metres tall, with blonde hair and 
 blue eyes. I live in Edinburgh with my parents and two
 elder sisters.
 I am a secondary school student. My school is in the
 centre of the city. It is very old and beautiful with about 
 five hundred students and sixty teachers . I go to school 
 every day from 9.00 a.m to 3.30 p.m. First , we have 
 lessons. Then we have a lunch- break for one and a half 
 hours. After that, we either have more lessons or play
 games. 
 I hope you will write to me and tell me about yourself,
 your school and your daily routine.
