Most of us have a sweet tooth. We love to eat a cookie, a donut or a piece of chocolate. But have you noticed what often happens when you eat one? When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects part of our brain. We may feel better, but the good feeling stops and we just want another one. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. This is why many scientists believe that our love of sugar might be an addiction. In the body, sugar acts like an addictive drug, one that doctors recommend we all cut down.
It seems obvious now that too much sugar can harm us, but why is it harmful? In early human history, the body began storing sugar as fat to use as energy. Our bodies are efficient, so they need very little sugar. Today, the Western diet has the highest amount of sugar in history. There are also more high blood pressure and diabetes in the world. Some researchers believe that too much sugar may be the culprit.
How do we battle our sweet tooth? Doctors advise us to cut down on sweets. They recommend that we choose healthy foods for snacks. Nuts, dark chocolate and yogurts are some of them. Yet even healthy foods can have too much sugar. Yogurts that are advertised as low-fat can have 17 grams, about half the daily allowance. However, the less sugar you eat, the less you want. Exercise helps, too. Using facilities such as walking tracks and gymnasiums can help control our desire.

While studying species along the west coast of the U.S in the early 1960s, Robert Paine found that one type of starfish played a major role in the coastal ecosystem. Although it was a predator, it helped other species in the area by controlling the abundance of grazing animals. When the starfish were removed, two types of mussels grew unchecked and finally displaced other species. In essence, the starfish were responsible for the diversity of the coastal community. Paine soon published his findings and dubbed the creatures that are paramount to an ecosystem keystone species.
Since his landmark work, keystone species have been more rigidly defined. Most biologists consider them to be species that play critical roles within a community. They also have an impact much greater than would be expected, considering their relative abundance. However, this definition is still fairly subjective. As a result, there can be disagreement among scientists as to whether a group is a keystone species or not.
The failure to reach a consensus has led to some friction. The main reason is that keystone species are major targets for conservation efforts. As they directly influence their community, their absence could cause an ecosystem to collapse. Thus, a significant number of resources are allocated to ensuring that they thrive. Failure to properly identify the correct keystone species, then, would mean that conservation efforts were misspent.
Another source of contention is the choice to broaden the definition of keystone species. Paine’s original work cited only predators as being significant. More recently, biologists have named some prey species and plants as keystone species. They argue that the effect on the given ecosystem should be the primary consideration in the designation of a keystone species. The role of the species in question is not essential. However, there is still some reluctance to extend the theory beyond its original scope.
The theory of keystone species is still in its infancy. Until it is further developed, its use to conservationists will remain limited. However, it has its successes. Most recently, wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. At first, local residents were worried that the predators would have a negative effect on the number of deer and other small mammals. But scientists argued that as the keystone species, they would help improve the health and diversity of local wildlife. In the years since, the wolf population has thrived. Along with wolves, the number of deer has increased. With further work, the theory of keystone species will be able to play an even greater role in conservation efforts.
