Parents pay £280 for the course where their children can have fun and learn how to make good food. Class member Bill, aged ten, says, “I love my mum cooking and now I can do it better than her. The teachers make us laugh, especially when we sit down with them to share the food we’ve made.” Flora is twelve, and she is having problems preparing onions. “I love cooking. I did a meal for ten friends which they really enjoyed. Then my mum suggested I take up a hobby, instead of doing nothing at weekends. I was happy staying at home, so I wasn’t too keen at first. I’m really glad I decided to come, though.” Their teacher, Philippe, says, “It’s great fun. Children pay attention and remember things better than adults, although the kitchen isn’t always as tidy when they’re cooking! As adults, we’re always learning more about food. If parents interest their children in cooking while they are young, they’ll have enough skill to make food for themselves when they leave home.” 1. What is the writer trying to do in the text? I just wish we could eat it together instead of taking it home. D. I was on a waiting list for ages, but now I’m on the course. Last week I cut up some onions – It was hard. There are two headings which you do not need to use. A. Heroes in Flames C. An Explosion of Fire E. Lessons Learned G. A Tragedy Waiting to Happen B. Desperate Search D. Death Toll Rises F. Death Trap 1.. The number killed in the Bradford City football ground disaster has increased to 52, more than 70 police and spectators have also been detained in hospital, making this one of the worst tragedies in football history. 2 .. The match was being recorded by Yorkshire TV when the fire began. When it first broke out, a few tongues of flame could be seen under the wooden seats in the G block of the stand. Some of the spectators walked away casually from the smoke. Then suddenly the fire spread with terrifying speed, and within minutes the whole stand suddenly burst into flames. 3 . Most of the spectators rushed forwards onto the pitch to avoid the blaze. In the panic, several spectators were crushed, and police and other fans ran back to the stands to help them. The rescuers’clothes and hair caught fire in the intense heat, but their bravery saved many lives. 4 . Most of the dead were found piled up at the back of the stand, where they had run to try and escape from the fire. However, the gates at the back of the stand had been locked before the start of the match. This had been done to prevent people from entering without paying. Eye-witnesses spoke of fans being crushed beneath the turnstiles in a desperate attempt to escape. There was no way of putting out the fire because extinguishers had been removed because they had been used in the past by fans as missiles. 5 .. The police are faced with the problem of identifying the victims, and dental records and jewellery are being collected to help with the task. Your answers: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. PART 4: Read the text. Fit the missing sentences A-E into gaps 1-5 in the text. Write your answers in the numbered box. One day in 1963, a dolphin named Elvar and a famous astronomer, Carl Sagan, were playing a little game. The astronomer was visiting an institute which was looking into the way dolphins communicate with each other. Sagan was standing on the edge of one of the tanks where several of these friendly, highly intelligent creatures were kept. (1) The dolphin wanted Sagan to scratch his stomach again, as the astronomer had done twice before. Elvar looked up at Sagan, waiting. Then, after a minute or so, the dolphin leapt up through the water and made a sound just like the word ‘more’. The astonished astronomer went to the director of the institute and told him about the incident. (2). Dolphins have bigger brains in proportion to their body size than human have, and it has been known for a long time that they can make a number of sounds. (3).Sound travels much faster and much further in water than it does in air. That is why the parts of the brain that deal with sound are much better developed in dolphins than in humans. (4).. Scientists don’t agree on this. A language is not just a collection of sounds, or even words. A language has a structure and what we call a grammar. The structure and grammar of a language help to give it meaning. (5) If you stop to think about it, you will see that this difference doesn’t come from the words in the question but from the difference in structure. That is why the question “Can dolphin speak?” can’t be answered until we find out if dolphins not only make sounds but also arrange them in a grammatical order which affects their meaning. For example, the two questions “Who loves Mary?” and “Who does Mary love?” mean very different things. “Oh, yes. That’s one of the words he knows”, the director said, showing no surprise at all. Elvar had just swum up alongside him and had turned on his back. But can it be said that dolphins have a “language”, in the real sense of the word? What is more, these sounds seem to have different functions, such as warning each other of danger. Your answers: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
