Date : Period 7 Unit 2 SCHOOL TALKS Lesson: READING I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Read some short talks related to school. Understand and talk about some problems related to school. II. Language Focus: Grammar: Revision New words: be struck, attitude, opinion. III. Teaching Aids: Pictures, extra board, transparent sheet, overhead projector, cassette player, textbook . . . IV. Procedures: Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Warm-up (5 minutes) - Teacher prepares a picture in which there are some school activites at recess. - Teacher asks Ss some questions related to the activities in the picture. + Where are they? + What are they doing at recess? + What is the most popular activity at recess? What are they talking about? - Teacher lead into the new lesson: I think that the most popular topic students often talk is about their schools. Today, you’ll study a new lesson. Unit 2 – School Talks - Students close their books and listen to the teacher’s explanation and asnwer. + They are in the school yard. + Some Ss are playing marbles, others are eating and drinking. The other are talking or chatting with their friends. + The most popoular activity is talking. - Ss listen and open the textbook to enter the new lesson. Pre-reading 8 minutes - Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs, asking and answering the questions given in the textbook. - Teacher calls two pairs of Ss to present their topic. - Ss open their books, working in pairs. - Ss present their talks before the class. While-reading 20 minutes Task 1 - Teacher asks students to read the text in silence for the first time to complete Task 1 individually. - Teacher goes around the class and helps them correct any mistakes. - Teacher requires Ss to show their results. - Teacher introduces some new words. New words: + be struck (v) + attitude (n) + opinion : idea (n) Task 2 -Teachers introduces Task No. 2 clearly. -Teachers asks students to to have a quick look at the task, and then asks them to works in pairs to find out who . . . -Teacher observes the class and corrects mistakes if necessary. * Expected answer: Mr. Phong / Mr. Phong / Miss Phuong / Mr. Phong / Mr. Phong / Mr. Phong / Miss Phuong / Mr. Ha Task 3 -Teacher asks students to read the questions carefully. -Teacher asks students to work in pairs, asking and answering the questions given in the exercise. -Teacher goes around the class and helps students correct mistakes. -Teacher asks some students to go to the board and present their result. -Teacher gives out the correct answers. - Students read the text in silence. - Students do the task 1 and then check again with a partner. - Students take notes new words in the notebook. -Students listen. -Students work in pairs and do the exercise. -Students listen and correct mistakes. -Students read the question - Students work in pair and do the exercises. -Students present their result on the board. -Students listen and take notes. Post- reading 10 minutes -Teacher applies “brainstorming” activity to guide Ss to work in groups, talking about some problems related to school. * Guiding questions for students. + What subjects you like learning best and why? +What you like or dislike doing at school? +What you worry about at school? -Teacher invites the representatives of groups to give their talk before the class. -Students work and discuss in small groups. - Sdudents present. Homework 3 minutes - Teacher asks students to write short paragraphs about what they like or dislike doing at home (approxiately 50 words). - Students listen and take notes. Date : Period 8 Unit 2(cont.) SCHOOL TALKS Lesson: SPEAKING I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Express starting and closing statements of a conversation. II. Language Focus: Grammar: Revision New words: III. Teaching Aids: Textbooks. IV. Procedures: Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Warm-up (3 minutes) Play a game - T introduces the sistuation and gives a short dialogue on the board. “ Supposing that you meet an old friend at a souvenir shop. You are in a hurry. What will you say to open and end the conversation? A: Hello! Hoa (1) B: Hi, Lan. How are you? A: Fine, thanks. And you? B: Very well, thanks. We haven’t seen each other for ages. Would you like to have a drink? A: Sorry. I’m busy now. I must go now. See you later.(2) -T asks Ss to complete the dialogue in pairs. -T invites some pairs to present their ideas. -T explains and points out where the two important statements are in a conversation. -Ss close the textbook, and look at the board. -Ss work in pairs, practise making the conversation. -Ss listen and take notes. Pre-speaking 10 minutes Task 1 -T introduces the situation clearly. - Teacher and a student practise the dialogue. -T asks Ss to put the expressions under the appopriate headings. -T goes around the classroom and helps students while they are pratising. -T asks some Ss to read aloud their results. -Ss observe and listen to teacher’s guide. -Ss do the exercises as guided. -Ss practise individually. -Ss read their results aloud. While-speaking 15 minutes Task 2: -T asks Ss to rearrange the sentences to make a meaningful conversation. -T goes around the class and helps students. -T remarks and gives out the key. * Expected answer: D – F – B – H – E – C – G -T asks Ss to work in pairs, reading the rearrang- -ed conversation. Task 3 -T explains the requirements clearly. -T asks Ss to do the exercise the textbook. -T asks Ss to work in pairs and practise the conversation. -Ss rearrange the sentences -Ss work in pairs, practising the conversation. -Ss present the dialogue. -Ss listen to the teacher’s explanation. -Ss work in pairs and do the exercise. Post- speaking 15 minutes Task 4 -T explain the requirements of the task clearly. -T divides the class into small groups. -T gives a topic to each group and asks them to make a short conversation. -T goes around the class and helps them. -T invites some representatives to present their conversation before the class. -Ss work in groups of four, talking about their topic just given by teacher. -Ss present their dialogue. Homework 2 minutes -T asks Ss to rewrite the conversation prepared in the class. - Students listen and take notes Date : Period 9 Unit 2(cont.) SCHOOL TALKS Lesson: LISTENING I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Listen short conversations having contents related to school subjects and daily talks. Talk about problems theu have experienced at school. II. Language Focus: Grammar: New words: Purchase, pedal, drop . . . III. Teaching Aids: Pictures in the textbook, cassette, extra board . . . IV. Procedures: Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Warm-up (5 minutes) -T asks Ss to make questions for the following responses. (shown on the extra board) + I have English, Math, History today. + No, I don’t. I don’t like biology. I only like Math. + Yes, I’d love to + For about two weeks. + I like vegetables very much. -T encourages Ss to make as many questions as possible. -T calls Ss to check and remarks if necessary. -Ss close the textbook, work in pairs . -Ss present their answers on the board. Pre-listening 8 minutes -T explains the requests of listening task clearly. -T asks Ss to work in individual and then exchange their results after listening. -T goes around the class and helps Ss. -T gives out the feedback. * Expected answer: 1 – C; 2 – E; 3 – A; 4 – B; 5 – D -Ss listen to teacher’s guidance. - Ss work in individual and listen to the tape. While-listening 22 minutes Task 1 -T asks students to work in pairs to ask and answer the questions about the pictures. -T makes a model with a student. T: What can you see in the picture? T: What are they talking about? -T goes around the class and helps Ss to make their own dialogues basing on the situations in the pictures. -T plays the tape 3 times. Each time has a short pause for Ss to check their listening. -T gives out the keys to the listening task after asking Ss to show their results on the board. - Teacher plays the tape for the threes times. Each time, teacher gets feedback from students and helps them correct mistakes. * Expected answer: + Picture a = Conversation 4 + Picture b = Conversation 1 + Picture c = Conversation 2 + Picture d = Conversation 3 - Students go to the board and do the task . - Students listen carefully. S: I can see two people standing in front of the hotel S: I think they are talking about the service of the hotel. . . . -Ss work in pairs, practise making the conversations. -Ss listen to the tape and take peer correction. -Ss present the result on the board. -Ss listen and take notes. Task 2 -T lets Ss have a quick look at the questions to see if there are any new words. -T asks Ss to work in pairs to answer the questions before listening again. -T plays the tape three times. Each time has a short pause to check and get feedback from students. -T compares the results of students with each other. * Expected answers: 1. Lan is taking English this semester. 2. Lan is in Miss Phuong’s class. 3. Nam is at the party. 4. Son plans to stay in Nha Trang for a week. 5. No, she doesn’t. She travels alone. -Ss listen to T’s guidance and read the questions to find out any new words. -Ss listen to the tapes three time, giving out the answers,correcting mistakes if having. -Ss take notes the keys. Task 3 -T asks Ss to read the conversation in the textbook to find any new words. -T asks Ss to work in pairs to guess and complete the missing words before listening again. -T plays the recording twice. Each time has a short pause for Ss to check their listening. -T summarize the results of Ss before giving out the keys. * Expected answer: 1. it here 2. very nice 3. big 4. comfortable 5. traveling 6. no 7. alone 8. for a drink -Ss read the conversation in individual. -Ss work in pairs to do the exercise. -Ss listen to the tape twice. -Ss present their results in front of the class. -Ss listen and take notes. Post- listening 8 minutes -T asks Ss to work in groups of 2 tables to talk about the problems they have experienced at school. -T goes around the class and helps Ss. -T invites a representative of each group to give their talk in front of the class. -T remarks. - Students work in groups, talking about the theme just given by the teacher. -Ss present their talks. -Ss listen to T’s remarks. Homework 2 minutes -T asks Ss to make some short conversations at home. - Students listen and take notes Date : Period 10 Unit 2(cont.) SCHOOL TALKS Lesson: WRITING I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Understand simple structures of a form. Fill necessary information in an enrolment form. II. Language Focus: Grammar: The simple past tense and the time relaters (time expressions) New words: marital status, sign, capital, applicable, male, female . . . III. Teaching Aids: An extra board, form of application, form of health examination. IV. Procedures: Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Warm-up (3 minutes) Task 1 -T prepares some kinds of forms. -T asks Ss some questions about these form. + What are they? + When do we use these kinds of forms? + What/ Which information do we often have to provide when filling the forms? -T leads into the new lesson “Today you’re going to study how to fill in a form.” -Ss close the books, and then answer T’s questions. + They are forms. + They use these forms to apply for jobs, open accounts, send or receive things from the P.O, attend a academic course at school and etc. . . +It includes names, addresses , ages , jobs and so on. Pre-writing 20 minutes Task 2 -T explains how to do the task 2. -T introduces some new words. + marital status (n) -T asks Ss to work in individual first, and then exchange their results with their partners. -T gets feedback from the Ss and gives out remarks. * Expected answers: 1 – D; 2 – F; - 3 – E; 4 – G; 5 – B; 6 – C; 7 – A -T asks Ss to work in pairs to ask and answer questions in column B. -T goes around the class and helps Ss correct mistakes. -Ss observe and listen to teacher’s guidance -Ss guess the meaning of the new words. -Ss practise doing the Ex. -Ss work in pairs. Task 3 -T explains how to practise Task 3. -T asks Ss to find out any new words, helps Ss to understand their meanings. + applicable (a) + male ≠ female (n) -T goes around the class to help and check their practice. -Ss listen to T’s guidance. -Ss write down new words. -Ss practise doing the task . While-writing 10 minutes Task 4 -T explains the requirements of Task 3 clearly. -T asks Ss to work individually and complete the form given in the textbook. -T goes around the class to get feedbacks from them. -Ss listen to T’s guidance. -Ss work individually and complete the form. -Ss give their feedbacks to teacher. Post- writing 10 minutes -T invites some Ss to fill in the previously prepared forms. -T gives out remarks, asks Ss to find out any mistakes, then helps Ss correct mistakes if have. -T asks Ss to exhange their forms. -T gets and remarks feedbacks from the Ss. -Ss look at the extra board and do the exercise. -Ss work in pairs. -Ss listen and take notes. Homework 2 minutes -T asks students to complete all of the exercises in the textbook. -T asks students to prepare Language Focus for next period. -Ss listen and take notes Date : Period 11-12 Unit 2(cont.) SCHOOL TALK Lesson: LANGUAGE FOCUS I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: Pronounce exactly and fluently the sounds / T / and / a: / in words and its sentences. Use the simple past and simple present tense, adverbs of frequency correctly in speaking and writing. II. Language Focus: Grammar: Revision New words: III. Teaching Aids: Textbooks IV. Procedures: Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Warm-up (3 minutes) Play a game -T writes the sentences on the board. + His father is watering plants on the farm. + My cousin is Lan’s uncle. -T asks Ss to read the above sentences and find out which sounds repeated more times than others. -T leads into the new lesson “Today we are going to practise pronouncing the sounds / T / and / a: / -Ss close the textbook, read the sentences shown on the black board. -Ss work and find out the repeated sounds in the sentences. Pro-nunciation 10 minutes Activity 1 – Listen and repeat -Twrites two sounds / T / and / a: / on the board, reads them twice first. And then T asks Ss to read the sounds in chorus. -T explains the differences between the two sounds and how to pronounce them. -T guides Ss to practise pronouncing the two sounds. Activity 2 – Practise these sentences -T reads the sentences first as model. -T asks Ss to pay much more attention to stressed syllables. -T asks Ss to work in pairs, picking out the words containing the sounds / T / and / a: / - T asks Ss to take peer correction. -Ss observe and listen to teacher’s guidance. -Ss listen. -Ss practise -Ss listen carefully & work in pairs to do the exercise. Grammar Vocabulary 30 minutes -T requires students to answer the questions given by him. + I am studying English -T leads into the exercise. Activity 1- Make questions for the following answers. -T asks Ss to do the Exercise 1 in individual. -T calls Ss to present their practice in order to check and correct mistakes. * Expected answers 1.
