 When Joseph Meister who had been bitten by a mad dog and cured by Pasteur recovered, the world became aware of the greatness of a French chemist named Louis Pasteur. Scientists today who are developing cures for infectious diseases still rely on the basic insights he provided that diseases can be caused by bacteria and other tiny organism, and that these bacteria can be controlled. This process is now named pasteurization after its discoverer.
Pasteur was born in a little town in the Jura Mountains near the Swiss frontier, in 1822. He was the son of a tanner who hoped the boy would become a schoolmaster. While teaching at Besancon, Pasteur became interested in Chemistry and after studying at Paris qualified as a doctor of science. He was appointed head of the science department at Lille University in 1854.
Grateful people from all over the world subscribed money to build the Pasteur Institute in Paris, which was opened in 1888. There are now Pasteur Institutes in many parts of the world. Pasteur was a simple, modest and kindly man and a devout Roman Catholic. He received honours from many countries for his great work in the fight against diseases.
