Learning how to learn

Are you an exercise fanatic or do you prefer to lie in front of the TV? There’s good news and
there’s bad news whoever you are.
We all have some idea how fit we are- for example, someone even a little fitter than me doesn’t
have to stop for breath at the top of a hill! The question is how do you get fit? Exercise, of course! But
(and this is the good news for people like me!) not all the time.
Too much training is actually bad for your body. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we
shouldn’t take exercise, but rest is also important. Muscles are damaged during physical exercise.

After a really hard day, your body needs around 48 hours to recover . While you are resting, your
muscles are repaired and strengthened.
A good way to get fit is to take up running. If you want to give it a try, choose a distance that’s
long is enough to challenge you but short enough to allow you to finish in comfort. Sa ve the long
distances until you’ve had plenty of practice.
A ‘fun run’ with runners every level of training is a good place to start. Keep away from runs
with big hills and try to avoid extremely hot or cold weather. Remember - build up gradually and have
two or three rest days every week. A few days before the ‘big day’, start taking it easy.
There’s more good news for lazy people like me. After hard exercise, your muscles need
carbohydrates and protein- so you should eat something like a sandwich fairly quickly. And the more
you exercise, the more food you need.
Rest is essential if you want your fitness to improve - and so is sensible eating and drinking.
And that can be done in front of the TV! Fitness fanatic or couch potato? It’s best to be a bit of bo th!

named Freddy Adu, that dream came true. At just 14, Freddy started playing professionally f or DC
United, which made him the youngest professional athlete in modern team sports history.

that he was born to play the game. His mother, Emelia, says he has been playing soccer since he could

One day in 1963, a dolphin named Elvar and a famous astronomer, Carl Sagan, were playing a little
game. The astronomer was visiting an institute which was looking into the way dolphins communicate
with each other. Sagan was standing on the edge of one of the tanks wher e several of these friendly,
highly intelligent creatures were kept. (1)
The dolphin wanted Sagan to scratch his stomach again, as the astronomer had done twice before.
Elvar looked up at Sagan, waiting. Then, after a minute or so, the dolphin leapt up through the water

and made a sound just like the word ‘more’. The astonished astronomer went to the director of the
institute and told him about the incident. (2).
Dolphins have bigger brains in proportion to their body size than human have, and i t has been known
for a long time that they can make a number of sounds. (3).Sound travels much faster
and much further in water than it does in air. That is why the parts of the brain that deal with sound are
much better developed in dolphins than i n humans. (4).. Scientists don’t agree on this.
A language is not just a collection of sounds, or even words. A language has a structure and what we
call a grammar. The structure and grammar of a language help to give it meaning. (5)  If
you stop to think about it, you will see that this difference doesn’t come from the words in the question
but from the difference in structure. That is why the question “Can dolphin speak?” can’t be answered
until we find out if dolphins not only make sounds but also arrange them in a grammatical order which
affects their meaning.
A. For example, the two questions “Who loves Mary?” and “Who does Mary love?” mean very
different things.
B. “Oh, yes. That’s one of the words he knows”, the director said, showing no surpris e at all.
