Lilian: Paula’s taking redundancy. Joanna: Oh, she is gonna take it, is she? Others: Mmm. Ahhh. Eileen: Knew that was on the cards. Joanna: Yeah. She wasn’t sure last time I spoke to her. Alicia: I didn’t know. Joanna: I’m not surprised. Lilian: Yes, well, I mean, she’s been working part time because her parents are so sick. Others: Yeah. Yeah. Eileen: Yeah. Poor bugger. Not just one, but both at the same time. Lilian: I know. And her father’s in hospital. Joanna: Oh, no wonder she’s hardly been here. Eileen: Yeah yeah exactly. I wonder who’s gonna get her job. Lilian: I heard. Joanna: Who? Lilian: Joan’s going for it. Others: No! Eileen: You’re joking! Joan? [laughter] Joanna: Oh that’s ridiculous. Eileen: Oh God! Joanna: Oh, it’s a joke. She couldn’t do a supervisor’s job. [laughter] Joanna: She can’t communicate with anyone. Who told you that? Alicia: Oh, depends who with. She communicates pretty well with the boss. Joanna: Oh that’s true. [laughter] Alicia: Can I make you another coffee? Eileen: Oh. That’ll get back. Joanna: That’s why she’s gonna get the job though. That’s not fair. Alicia: Well, if she gets the job, I’m moving to another section. Joanna: I don’t blame you. I’m with you. Lilian: But wait a minute, I’ve also heard. Joanna: What? Lilian: Jan’s going for it too. Joanna: Oh, that’s all right Eileen: Oh wait wait wait. Did you know she’s getting divorced? Lilian: No! Eileen: Yeah truly. Joanna: Really? Others: Oh no. Finally Eileen: Yes, they’ve got the house on the market. Actually the auction’s this Saturday. Others: Ohh. Eileen: But there’s a huge mortgage on it. There’ll be nothing left. The poor bugger. Joanna: Oh the poor thing, a divorce. Eileen: Mmm yeah. Mind you she said it was amicable. So that’s good. Alicia: Oh she’s lucky. That’s my ambition in life to have an amicable divorce. [laughter] Eileen: I think the bad ones are better. You’ve got nothing to regret. [laughter] Alicia: Yeah. Well mine’s shaping up to be a bad one. Joanna: Oh really? I thought once the kids were older it wouldn’t be so bad. TThẩm Tâm Vy LISTENING TO AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH ADVANCED LEVEL Alicia: Yeah. You’d think that but if there’s a lot of unresolved stuff, it’s a nightmare. Eileen: Mmm mmm. Alicia: I mean economically it’s so bad. Just try and cheat you out of your share of the money. Eileen: Aren’t they mongrels? Joanna: I didn’t know you were going through a divorce. Is that happening now? Alicia: Yeah, well we’ve been separated for years. But this is the final economic, you know. Eileen: Mmm. Alicia: Finally separating. We put it off for years. Eileen: Ah, ours was a cinch. We didn’t have any money. [laughter] Eileen: So there was no problem there. [laughter] Joanna: That’s easy. [laughter] Eileen: Mind you. It meant he paid no bloody maintenance. Joanna: Oh, that’s outrageous! Lilian: Same here! Joanna: Really? Lilian: That’s such a common problem, isn’t it. Joanna: Oh, it’s disgusting. Lilian: Oh, deadbeat dads. Yeah. Eileen: Oh, it doesn’t really matter. I mean the kids are grown up now. I can’t be bothered any more. It doesn’t matter. Joanna: So do the kids still see their father? Eileen: Oh no, well, the boys don’t, but my daughter does. Oh, she’s, um, having a baby. Others: Oh no. Really. Lovely. Joanna: Oh you’re gonna be a grandma! Lilian: Fantastic! Eileen: Yeeeesss. Isn’t it fantastic! [laughter] Lilian: Oh it is. [laughter] Eileen: Oh God. Well she’s chuffed. Oh, you know she’s still studying? Mm hmm. Yeah. Eileen: And so her husband is too. Yeah. Yeah. Eileen: So she rings her father to tell him the news. Get this. Mmm. He he’s worried about how she’s gonna support herself. Joanna: Oh my! Alicia: What? He is just. Eileen: I couldn’t believe it. Joanna: Oh bastar, ohhhhh. Eileen: The cheek of it. I know. She should have said, Oh, Dad we were hoping you’d support us. Exactly. Alicia: For the first time. [laughter] Eileen: Make a change, wouldn’t it? [laughter] Eileen: Out of everyone she told, he was the only one who was worried about it. Alicia: Yeah right. Lilian: Yeah. Subconscious guilt, that’s why. Eileen: Yeah. Joanna: I reckon. Eileen: Absolutely. Joanna: You married him!
